Autism Evaluations & Diagnosis

Understanding the Signs and Knowing When to Seek Help

At Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, we understand how important early identification and intervention can be for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a developmental condition that affects how a child communicates, interacts, and behaves. Because every child with autism is unique, the signs can vary widely in both type and severity.

Dr. Garriga offers specialized evaluations and guidance for families navigating concerns related to autism and other developmental conditions. We’re here to help you better understand your child’s development and support you every step of the way.

Early Signs of Autism

Parents are often the first to notice when something feels different about their child’s development. While every child grows at their own pace, certain signs may suggest the need for a closer look:

  • Limited or no eye contact

  • Delayed speech or language skills

  • Repeating the same words or phrases (echolalia)

  • Difficulty with back-and-forth conversations

  • Unusual or repetitive movements (like flapping hands or rocking)

  • Trouble adapting to changes in routine

  • Strong interest in specific topics or objects

  • Walking on tippy toes

  • Challenges with social interaction, such as not responding to their name, avoiding play with others, or not showing typical expressions of joy

  • Sensory sensitivities (over- or under-reacting to sounds, lights, textures, etc.)

When to Call the Doctor

If you're concerned about your child’s development at any age, trust your instincts. It’s important to speak with a pediatrician or developmental specialist as soon as possible. Early evaluation can lead to early intervention, and that can make a meaningful difference in your child’s growth and long-term outcomes.

You should consider scheduling a developmental evaluation with Dr. Garriga if:

  • Your child is not meeting developmental milestones (like babbling by 12 months, using simple words by 16 months, or combining two words by 24 months)

  • You’ve observed any of the signs above

  • You feel like something "just isn't right" about your child's behavior or development

  • You’ve been referred by your primary care provider for further evaluation

What to Expect During an Autism Evaluation

Dr. Garriga will perform a thorough developmental assessment that includes:

  • A detailed review of your child’s medical and developmental history

  • Observations of behavior and social interaction

  • Standardized screening tools tailored to your child’s age and symptoms

  • Collaboration with other specialists or therapists if needed

If a diagnosis of autism is made, Dr. Garriga will work closely with your family to develop a personalized care plan. This may include referrals to early intervention services, speech or occupational therapy, and educational support.

You’re Not Alone

Receiving an autism diagnosis, or even just navigating the uncertainty, can feel overwhelming. Dr. Garriga is here to offer not only medical expertise but also understanding, guidance, and long-term support for you and your child.
