Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Support for Focus, Behavior, and Success
ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in childhood—and it can affect children at home, at school, and in social situations. At Dr. Garriga’s clinic, we help families understand the signs of ADHD, explore treatment options, and create strategies to help children thrive.
If you're noticing ongoing difficulties with attention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity in your child, we're here to provide clarity, support, and expert care.
What Is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a condition that impacts a child’s ability to focus, stay organized, manage impulses, and control energy levels. While it’s normal for kids to be active and sometimes distracted, children with ADHD show persistent patterns that interfere with their daily functioning and development.
There are three main types of ADHD:
-
Inattentive Type: Trouble paying attention, following through on tasks, or staying organized
-
Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: Excessive movement, talking, or acting without thinking
-
Combined Type: A mix of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms
Signs to Look For
ADHD symptoms usually appear before the age of 12 but can become more noticeable as academic or social demands increase. Some signs that may indicate ADHD include:
-
Difficulty focusing or staying on task
-
Frequently losing items (homework, toys, school supplies)
-
Seeming not to listen when spoken to directly
-
Avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort
-
Forgetting instructions or skipping steps
-
Fidgeting, squirming, or having trouble sitting still
-
Talking excessively or blurting out answers
-
Interrupting conversations or having trouble taking turns
-
Struggling with time management or completing homework independently
These behaviors may be more noticeable in structured environments, such as school or group activities.
When to Call a Doctor
If your child’s behavior is affecting their academic progress, friendships, or family relationships, it’s time to seek guidance. ADHD is not caused by bad parenting or lack of discipline—it’s a medical condition that can be effectively managed with the right tools and support.
You should consider an evaluation with Dr. Garriga if:
-
Teachers or caregivers have expressed concern about attention, behavior, or impulse control
-
You notice consistent struggles with focus, organization, or following directions
-
Your child’s energy levels seem unusually high for their age and interfere with daily activities
-
Emotional outbursts, frustration, or low self-esteem are becoming more frequent
What to Expect During an ADHD Evaluation
Dr. Garriga uses a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to assess your child’s behavior, development, and learning needs. The evaluation may include:
-
A detailed history of your child’s development, school performance, and behavior
-
Questionnaires completed by parents and teachers
-
Direct observation and interviews with your child
-
Ruling out other conditions that can mimic ADHD symptoms
If ADHD is diagnosed, Dr. Garriga will partner with your family to develop a personalized care plan. This may include behavioral strategies, parent coaching, school accommodations, and, in some cases, medication.
